Where was this team during the ‘90 and ‘91 seasons when Joe
Hepfinger and I had the JV and considered playing (and losing) in five innings
to be a moral victory. We might even have beaten such a team and scored more
runs than the Rams score points (well, maybe not the Rams, but a good team;
still, you know what I mean).
I was extremely proud of our girls today and the respect they
showed an overmatched opponent, decimated by injuries and lacking real softball experience. When we visualize before each game, we ask the
questions, “Who do we fear?” (No one)
and “Who do we respect?” (Everyone).
These are difficult
games (on both sides of the ball) and it can be a challenge to refrain from,
unintentionally, of course, insulting the other team. The pressure is off, but
laughing and giggling can be misinterpreted as hurtful. Before the season
started, we talked about another of our mantras, “Win with class, lose with
class,” and the girls exemplified that with great empathy.
Grace Behrle notched her first win, Alina Castro made her
pitching debut, and every girl got an at bat and in the game. Even Olivia Weik,
broken hand and all, bunted for a hit.
We’ll practice (hard and fast)
tomorrow, because Festus promises to be a tough opponent. However, please note that I have now made my mistake for the year, getting it out of the way a little early: Our game Friday is AT HOME. I will try to use as many avenues as possible to correct that mistake, but please pass the word.
