You have to beat the teams you’re
expected to beat. Parkway Central is one of those, despite the fact that they
beat us last year. But if we expected them to just lay down and roll over for
us in this “Third time’s the charm” make-up, they quickly disabused us of that
notion and jumped out to 2-0 and 3-1 leads going into the bottom of the second.
On thing about this version of the
JV Statesmen is that we do not panic (Hitchhiker’s
Guide to the Galaxy Rule #1); instead we go to work, whatever the
situation. Two outs, no one on, no problem. It wasn’t dark but there were a lot of rockets giving off red glares and we saw good at bats up and down the line as the bottom of the lineup got things started and eventually every player eligible to
play today had at least two trips to the plate.
Caroline Kinstler and Becca
DeGreeff notched their first hits of the season, while Grace Behrle banged a
double and triple (and might have had more had not the Colt CF played at the
fence for her third AB), and Emma Hintze, Hannah Love and Claudia LeSage each had
three hits from the first, second and fourth spots in the order.
Our defense reverted to its
previous form to back the no-walk pitching of AnnaClaire Bryant. Parkway
Central was certainly not terrible and their coach did a good job of getting a
lot in inexperienced girls grounded in the fundamentals of solid softball.
Nevertheless, the game ended in the bottom of the sixth as we scored our 13th
run on Alina Castro’s ground ball to the right side after a 7-pitch at bat.
Tomorrow is still up in the air, as
the Vikings of Parkway North are struggling with injuries and are down to just
9 players for each squad. If anyone is absent (and one of their players went
home ill today), the JV game will not be played and we will practice, sliding
for example. We will send out an e-mail blast, and use GameChanger news, as
soon as we know for certain, one way or another, what the situation is.
