Taming the Tigers: Webster 10, Festus 7

Okay, so winning is almost always more fun than losing (though losing a well-played close game is more fun than winning a game like Wednesday’s). But winning some games are a lot more fun than others. Case in point….
Several factors made this more fun than average:
1.   We came back when we could have, and many teams would have quit. No panic, no fear, no quit, just play. Awesome!
2.   The girls were playing for more than just themselves. They dedicated this game to their friend and classmate.
3.   Festus can’t ever quite believe they lose to us. They just know they’re better than we are. This is our third straight win over them.
4.   Some coaches are more enjoyable to beat than others. Winning becomes more fun because of who is losing, and I’m not talking about the Festus players.
You can pick your own favorite reason. I’m partial to all of them, myself. Team wins are just so great, when everyone contributes, whether it’s warming up a relief pitcher, pinch running, cheering from the bench, having great at bats, making a good defensive play.
To note just a few of the standout performers, and with no slight intended to any of the others who contributed, Maggie Pool banged out three hits, drove in three runs, started a double play with a “Not on my watch” catch, and threw her bat twice. Karlee Scholtes started off our big comeback inning with one of her two hits and the avalanche turned into a 6-run fourth inning, handing ACB a deserved win. The bottom four in the line-up had five hits, drove in two runs, and scored five. That’s balance, folks. Oh, and let’s not forget Alina Castro’s game-ending, perhaps patented, TroMoSpecial™ catch!
Grace Behrle just set the JV record for “saves” with her second. Okay, that’s a low bar, but having two strong pitchers is a rarity on the JV level. Heck, it’s a rarity on the varsity level.
Lots of patience, grit and no panic. I just love the way this team is maturing into a cohesive unit that plays for each other. #couldn’tbeprouder
