Last year’s defeat by Festus
in a rain-shortened game was probably the one that left the most bitter taste
in the team’s mouth. All of us remain convinced that had we been able to play a
full game we would have prevailed. We took the long way to find the Festus
field, although I’ve had better tours of more interesting places.
When we finally found the
field at which we were to play (obviously it is not set up, lighting wise, for good pictures) Festus, it was a rush to get warmed and ready. The
first pitch took place at about 4:25 and we scored the first of our 16 runs for
the day. The Tigers’ defense and pitching were both shaky, but we generally had
trouble squaring up the ball, which kept the game sort of close, but with
little doubt about the final outcome as we continue to work out what our best
defensive and offensive lineups look like.
We still don’t know as
consistency has been difficult to come by. But we do know that we are lucky to
have a deep roster full of players who work hard, play hard, and support their
teammates. I told the girls I could pull nine names out of a barrel and play a
team that could compete with anyone.
Kelly Collins notched her
sixth win in the circle and scored four runs leading off, reaching base all
five times she batted. Good right side defense provided the defensive backing
she needed and we headed home with our twelfth win against 2 defeats. We have a
very challenging week ahead, but at least it’s home cooking, with three home
games against Northwest, Oakville and Summit.
