As
expected, this was a tough game, made tougher by the end of our opening winning
streak, dropping Game 6 to the Pioneers, 10-8. That’s the bad news. But that’s
really all the bad news.
Could
we have played better? Sure, but we are, by definition, a young team still
learning the game, so mistakes are just part of that process. They’re part of
the game at every level, and if you’re skeptical, tune in to a Cardinal
broadcast, especially this year.
We
actually outhit Kirkwood, with sophomores Julia Love (2), Zoe Schultz (3),
Allyson Peters (3), and Josie Krueger (2) all having multi-hit performances
against a pretty solid pitcher. Speaking of pitchers, sophomores Peters and Krueger did a great job in the circle for us, walking only one batter.
The
best news was, as the title implies, that the girls never gave up, never let
Kirkwood get comfortable, never folded our tents. We had the tying runs on base
every inning after we fell behind, even when the Pioneers jumped out to a 9-5
lead. The bench was noisy and active from the first pitch to our last out at
first. Couldn’t be prouder of our athletes.
The
girls also agreed that this game was a lot more fun than the shellackings we’ve
been laying on weaker teams. This one was
a game, and a good one. The Kirkwood program has been improving with a
stable coaching staff. The rivalry is real, but friendly, respectful and
sportsmanlike. This is interscholastic sports at its best.
Thanks
to Scott Hayes for the photos. The JV gets the Labor Day weekend off; see you
at Plymouth Tuesday for Parkway North, Wednesday against Francis Howell Central
(probably a tough test), and, if you’re in the mood for a longer trip,
Hazelwood West on Thursday. Happy Labor Day!
And for trivia buffs, this is the 100th post on the Webster JV Softball blog!
