I can’t remember when, if ever, we
lost to Seckman by fewer than 10 runs; I declared a “moral victory” two years
ago when we at least made them play all seven innings, but still lost, 11-0.
This year represented real progress, as we actually led, 3-2, after 3 innings
and kept the game close ‘til the end, before losing 7-3.
Props to our outfielders for their
defense today. They looked better than their JV status, not just in terms of
catching and throwing, but their movement without the ball, backing up both the
infielders and each other, “up for whatever,” as the advertising slogan goes.
Coach Cerutti accurately assessed their contribution when he noted, “With the
average JV outfield, this game would have been over after 5 innings.” To be
honest, I’ve seen varsity outfields that didn’t play this well.
Josie Krueger and Allyson Peters
again shared mound duties and did a good job of keeping our defense in the game
and tamping down on the Jaguar offense. Catcher Becca DeGreeff continued her
strong work shepherding our hurlers through tough innings.
We faced a strong pitcher, certainly
the best we’ve seen and although we only struck out six times, we only hit a
few balls hard and want to put more pressure on the opposition defense.
However, we generally took good at bats and can look forward to continued
improvement.
We’ll work on some things Monday at
practice before taking on Hazelwood West at home on Tuesday. Our game against
them last year was postponed and never made up. Two years ago we dropped a 13-9
decision in a game that I felt we could have, and perhaps should have won.
